As drivers prepare to hit the road for Thanksgiving in record numbers, gas prices are relatively steady compared to last week. The national average for a gallon of regular has stayed consistent since last Monday. Despite the burst of gasoline demand that will occur during Thanksgiving week, overall demand is low this time of year which helps keep pump prices down. AAA projects 73.3 million people will travel by car, which is nearly 90 percent of Thanksgiving travelers. That figure could end up being higher if air travelers experience cancelled flights or choose to drive to avoid airports.
Filling the tank is a good idea the night before a road trip since it’s one less thing to do on travel day. AAA also recommends checking your battery and tire pressure before hitting the road. During the last Thanksgiving holiday period, AAA responded to nearly 600,000 emergency roadside assistance calls nationwide to help stranded drivers with issues like dead batteries, flat tires, and empty fuel tanks.
This morning oil is trading in the $57-$64 range per barrel. According to the Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand decreased slightly. Diesel prices continue to increase. The national average is $3.79 – up two cents from last week. The New York average is $3.94, up four cents from last week.
When it comes to EV charging, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
