Hello Metalheads! This is John back with another album review. Burned in Effigy dropped their second full length album called Tyrannus Aeternum on October 31st, 2025. This release flew right under my radar until the day it dropped. This was yet another great find in the death metal sharing group on Facebook!

Burned in Effigy have this really awesome blend of technical and melodic death metal. They call themselves neo-classical death metal which is spot on in my book! The shredding, quick tempos and pure precision creates a sound almost like a concerto with the amount of skill that it takes. The vocals on this album are really steady and great. They fit perfectly into the sound and mainly use high/mid sounds with the occasionally low growl for accent!

The perfect example of this skill is on the track Wage of Exile, which happens to be my favorite! The lead guitar playing, matching drumming and even the secondary guitar and bass all are super fast. The biggest music nerd moment for this track is the “chorus” by far. The harmonies they employ for the first few chords are a circle of fifths which all classical composers in history love to use. This cycle of fifths is a brief one that they quickly turn around back into their original home. Such a cool implementation and embracing the “classical” part of their neo-classical part of their sub genre!

Over all Burned In Effigy have given us a really great album to listen to for quite a while. Tyrannus Aeternum get a 9.5/10 on my rating scale, this is going to be in rotation for a while for sure. I love listening to these bands that must have some kind of influence from the almighty band The Black Dahlia Murder, then figuring out how they take that sound and make it their own. Don’t forget to stream, follow and buy from this band! Links will be below!
