UBMD Neurology’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center
by Annette Pinder
For Western New York families worried about memory loss, confusion, or dementia, the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease at UBMD Neurology offers compassionate, thorough care nearby. Located in Buffalo, the center brings together medical experts, researchers, and support staff dedicated to improving the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s and other memory issues.
Led by Dr. Kinga Szigeti, a neurologist and nationally recognized Alzheimer’s researcher with advanced training in genetics and cognitive disorders, the center is one of ten New York State DOH Centers of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease and is the designated center for Western New York. This special designation reflects the center’s commitment to providing the highest standard of diagnosis, treatment, and support.
Comprehensive Evaluation and Personalized Care
When memory problems begin to interfere with daily life, early evaluation is essential. At this unique Alzheimer’s Care Center, patients undergo a thorough and thoughtful assessment that includes detailed medical history, neurological examination, blood tests, brain imaging, and memory and thinking tests. These steps help doctors distinguish between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and other causes of dementia.
Though there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, early diagnosis can significantly impact outcomes. The Center’s team develops personalized care plans to help patients stay independent, manage symptoms, and maintain quality of life. Families also receive education, counseling, and referrals to community resources that support caregiving and increase understanding.
Advancing Hope Through Research
Along with delivering exceptional clinical care, UBMD Neurology is deeply engaged in Alzheimer’s research. Under Dr. Szigeti’s leadership, scientists are exploring how genetics and brain biology influence the disease. Their aim is to discover new ways to predict, prevent, and treat Alzheimer’s more effectively. Some of the Center’s research is funded by federal agencies and foundations; Dr. Szigeti has received support from the Alzheimer’s Association and NIH for her work in genetics and translational research. Many patients treated at the center also have the chance to participate in research studies that could benefit them and contribute to the future of Alzheimer’s treatment.
Serving Western New York Families
Given the widespread prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease—with estimates in the millions nationwide and a steady increase projected—the Center plays a vital role in Western New York and beyond. Local estimates indicate tens of thousands of Alzheimer’s cases in the region, emphasizing the importance of a specialized memory disorders center.
The Center currently supports thousands of individuals across the eight counties of Western New York, providing both expert care and compassion. Families receive not only advanced medical treatment, but also a team that listens, understands, and supports them every step of the way.
