The University at Buffalo Center for the Arts (UBCFA) will once again open its doors to the public for Art in the Open — an annual celebration inviting the community to explore the creativity, energy and diversity of UB’s arts hub. The event will take place Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5–8 p.m. and is free and open to all.
Throughout the evening, guests can experience live performances, exhibitions, open studios and installations that highlight the vibrant work of UB students and faculty across the arts.
Adding to the evening’s excitement this year is a live performance by Buffalo-based band Lazlo Hollyfeld at 7 p.m. in the Atrium. Known for their experimental, instrumental sound, Lazlo Hollyfeld holds a unique place in the Center’s history—they were the very first musical guests featured in the “Music is Art Live @ the Center” television series, which celebrated Western New York’s leading contemporary musicians and visual artists through performances recorded at the UBCFA in partnership with the Music is Art organization. Two members of the band, Scott Molloy and Matt Felski, are also UB alumni, making this homecoming performance especially meaningful.
“Art in the Open is one of our favorite ways to celebrate the incredible talent across the arts at UB,” says Jamie Enser, executive director of the Center for the Arts. “Having Lazlo Hollyfeld return to the same stage where they performed 25 years ago perfectly captures the spirit of this event, connecting generations of artists, students and our wider community through art and shared experiences.
Guests can explore performances by UB students and faculty from Theatre and Dance., Music, Media Study, Arts Management, Art, along with UB Art Galleries exhibitions including Martha Jackson in Paris and Bits by Bits. Studios and labs throughout the Center will be open, offering visitors the chance and to meet artists, observe creative processes and experience the spaces where art is imagined and made.
Complimentary refreshments will be available, with music, movement and installations animating spaces throughout the Center. Parking is free and available in lots adjacent to the Center.
