Rochester, New York based technical death metal band Isomorphist dropped their debut EP “Iridescene” September 19th. Buffalo’s own Steve McIntosh of Inertia lent his vocal cords to this quirky (and cool) band. Ever wanted a technical band that was more flavorful and organic? Not focused on speed and notes per minute and focused on composing? This release breathes a lot of fresh life into a shredder’s genre that has gone rather stale. It has the fun and quirkiness of The Zenith Passage, with beautiful soaring leads like the Beyond Creation duo and Cynic inspired atmospheres.
There’s some sweet rhythms, some cool mellow guitar sections and Steve’s unique vocal set is the cherry on top. The guitar leads aren’t obnoxious and very musical setting the tone for the band’s debut. Alex’s playing is very tasteful mixing some cool shred and fusion sections. His leads don’t take up too much of their songs and is the gravy on top of a beautiful meal (musically speaking). The 5 tracks also aren’t long totaling a short 20 minute run time. It’s not too much to consume at once with so many notes over 6-8 minute anthems, rather it’s the total opposite. The music has purpose and meaning that you can feel in every song.
Being a fresh band on the scene it’s a very good concise release to start their journey. If you dig an experimental, technical and progressive style to your death metal definitely give this new band a listen. “Iridescence” has more soul than most of its peers in the technical scene. And that’s why I love their debut EP. It’s human, natural, organic and not robotic. It’s on all streaming platforms, including Bandcamp. Consider the latter to directly support the band. Share their links everywhere and help them grow.
