Hello Metalheads! This is John back, but this time I have an interview that I did with Andrew Guia from Unaligned. They have a new album coming out called A Form Beyond which I already covered in a previous piece! Here is the link: https://technicalmusicreview.com/2025/09/05/a-form-beyond-by-unaligned/
So without further ado:
John: How long have you been doing vocals?
Andrew: I started at around 15 years old and I’m 34 now, so awhile.
John: Did you have any favorite bands or vocalists that you looked up to?
Andrew: Well back in those days I was big into deathcore, so Job for a Cowboy with Johnny Davy, All Shall Perish and Eddie quite a bit and of course in the death metal world Trevor from The Black Dahlia Murder. Oh and Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth as well.
John: Oh I can really hear the Johnny Davy influence, you have his lows down pat but with your own spin on it.
John: I’m going to be honest, I’m not too into the black metal side of metal. Where did the “Blackened” aspects or influence come from in the music?
Andrew: I used to be into black metal a little bit, as did Cole, Taylor and Shane. Jack(their drummer) really has a lot of that influence and can play it very well.
John: Oh yeah his drumming on this album is incredible! What are the influences lyrically or just in general that inspired this album?
Andrew: Well some of it is about just the world around us. But a good portion is about dying, but more specifically the Egyptian afterlife and Tibetan book of dead.
John: What is your favorite song to rip through vocally?
Andrew: On the album or?…
John: Both! On the album, but also if you were to cover a song, what would it be?
Andrew: Well on the album it would be Essence Erased, it’s super punchy and fun to follow along to! Everybody has been comparing my low growls to Johnny Davy, so I’d like to try one of their songs. Maybe Forever Rot from their new album Moon Healer! I’ve been thinking about doing a cover and seeing what people think about me on Job for a Cowboy’s tracks.
John: Any plans to play live at all?
Andrew: We have been exploring that idea, maybe!
John: Thank you again for doing this interview with me, anything else you would like to add?
Andrew: Just to make sure you pre-order, well not you, I already know you did! But everybody else, check us out and pre-order! We are extremely grateful to Transcending Obscurity Records for signing us!
