As legislative changes continue to expand the autonomy of physician assistants (PAs) across New York State, Nazareth University in Rochester is taking steps to address the increasing demand for these vital healthcare roles.

Recent policy updates, such as increasing physician-to-PA ratios and allowing PAs to serve on public health boards, have strengthened the role of physician assistants. These changes not only improve patient access to care but also make the PA profession more attractive to future healthcare providers.

The physician shortage in Western New York has increased the demand for well-trained PAs. In response, Nazareth University continually enhances its curriculum and clinical opportunities, preparing students to work in various specialties, including primary care, critical care, and community health.

“The autonomy granted to PAs enables them to contribute more effectively to patient care,” said Cathy Rasmussen, Nazareth’s Dean of the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services. “Our programs focus on developing strong clinical skills, leadership, and patient-centered communication to prepare graduates to make a difference.”

Interest in Nazareth’s health sciences programs has grown, reflecting national trends of more applications and expanded roles in hospitals, private practices, and underserved communities. As these careers develop, Nazareth remains committed to providing high-quality, practical training that aligns with both students’ goals and community needs.

With carefully designed programs supporting both undergraduate and graduate students, Nazareth University plays a crucial role in developing future healthcare providers ready to lead in an evolving medical field.
