Hello Metalheads! This is John back with another album review! This time I bring to your attention a new melodic death metal band called Phyrxian Sun! They released their full length album Overlord on April 26th, 2025. This is yet another totally random recommendation that I saw and decided to give it a listen.
You ever find one of those albums that is so good and absolutely surprises you? This is the exact case for me for this band and album. This album reminds me a lot of early albums from The Black Dahlia Murder, which makes sense considering they are from Detroit. Very melodic, fast paced and enough heaviness to make anyone headbang! They sound very heavily thrash influenced but with melodic death metal roots.
The title track(Overlord) starts off the album with a plodding accented intro to the album, but quickly changes into a melodic and thrash inspired section. The death metal influence really comes out in the next passages with blast beats and super fast double bass that matches the rhythmic guitar lines.
For a rookie debut Phyrxian Sun really nailed it with this release! I’d give this one an easy 8/10 with a few minor complaints. I feel like by the middle of this album I lost a little bit of interest for some reason that I am having trouble pinning down. Other than that this is a stellar first outing for this band!
