Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announces a unified initiative with local law enforcement agencies across Niagara County to combat impaired driving. This effort, part of a statewide campaign, combines enforcement and education efforts to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired drivers.

From Friday, May 23rd through Monday, May 26th, 2025, law enforcement countywide will participate in the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign, a coordinated effort to deter impaired driving through increased patrols, public awareness, and proactive engagement. Officers will be out in force, sending a clear message: impaired driving will not be tolerated.

This enforcement period aligns with the Memorial Day weekend, a time often associated with increased alcohol consumption. The campaign underscores the dangers of driving under the influence of any substance — alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs. It is one of several high-risk periods targeted throughout the year, including Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, the Super Bowl, the winter holidays, and more.

Thanks to initiatives like STOP-DWI New York, supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, New York State has made measurable progress in reducing drug and alcohol related traffic deaths. However, impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable fatalities on our roads. Continued vigilance through visible enforcement and community outreach is essential to saving lives.

Sheriff Filicetti and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office urge all drivers to make safe, responsible choices. If you plan to drink or use any impairing substances, plan ahead —designate a sober driver, use public transportation, call a taxi, or arrange for a ride-sharing service.
