Welcome to our new (hopeful) monthly series “Split In Half”! For the death metal side of the site, we have a nerdy article for you underground brutal fanatics. It’s called “Split In Half” which is meant to push death metal splits of any era newer or older. Albums and EP’S always drop, but splits are a thing in death metal. So we’re here to do some write ups on some, and maybe some forgot even released. Releases get pushed online anywhere, but not a lot of love for splits. If you have a favorite split, please leave a comment including the link to listen to. I’m sure there’s some we haven’t heard yet and love to check them out.

Starting out the first “Split In Half” is the brutal 4 way “Acts Of Sadistic Cruelty”. Kill Everything, NecroticGoreBeast, Virulent Excision and Gorepot all contributed to this release. This bad boy dropped in 2022 and has a nice selection of brutal, slamming punishment. Texas’s Kill Everything kicked this one off with 3 tracks with their disgusting style. Since their 2018 debut “Scorched Earth” I’ve been a fan of their throwback style. They’re heavily influenced of late 90’s brutal death metal. Once I saw they were on this split I had to give it a rip when it dropped 3 years ago. Probably my favorite band on the split, dropping the classic brutality throwback sound. Original brutality,

Next up (in track order) are Canadian slammers NecroticGoreBeast. Per the usual, their music and brutal slams make everyone (including the dead) want to throw hands. The low tuned, nasty, slimy guitar riffs are absolutely filthy. The Beast takes no shit and they put 3 songs on to showcase their nastiness on “Acts Of Sadistic Cruelty”. Songs like “Gangrened Genital Tumor Exhibit” and “Purulent Rectal Discharge” make you go….yeah, that’s slam. The ridiculous song titles and endless waves of brutality add up. Good choice to follow up Kill Everything, pace wise.

Up third on the split is a newer band Virulent Excision. Bringing the filthy slams from Chicago, these boys mean business. They contributed 2 songs to this split “Consuming Mortality” and “Carnivorous Defleshment”. VE puts a modern take on brutal slamming death metal and no I don’t mean a deathcore edge. Production is crisper, not muddy and very clear sound wise. The band isn’t necessarily fast and rely heavily on grooves and nasty vocals to keep it literally chugging along. Dig the drum parts that keeps the band glued together. Don’t sleep on this newer band.

Last and never least is the ever so entertaining and legendary Gorepot. One of many projects slam legend Larry Wang is a part of is a comedic addition to a serious and brutal split. They contributed four songs of insanity to this release. The ridiculous samples and Wang’s many different vocal styles, the band’s silly slamming gore grind style is a welcome way to close this one out. So many funny titles and concepts in their library it was tough to find a favorite of their 4 songs here. “Mrs. claus is frustrated with Santa Claus because he only comes once per year”….says it all. I dig the bands that take this style seriously but equally welcome the bands that want to have fun and are goofy. Gorepot has always taken that level of goofy to many new levels, often unmatchable. Their speed is on display with some quick and also groovy riffs. If you know Gorepot, you know what to expect.

Definitely give this split a whirl. It has a variety of newer and classic brutality, and a funny goofy band like Gorepot closing it out. Definitely one of my favorite newer splits. I already know what one I want to cover next. As previously stated, comment somewhere whether it’s here on the site or social media what you want to see us check out or push. Hell if your band did a split send us the music links! We hope you enjoyed our first rendition of “Split In Half” and will see you in a month for our next featured split!
