Hello Metalheads! This is John back with another album review! This time I have the album From Nothing by Benthos to bring to your attention. Benthos released this on April 11th, 2025 via InsideOutMusic. This is another band I discovered via a Facebook ad.
Benthos are from Milan Italy, this is their second offering for our ears. They fit right along the progressive metal and rock line in my mind with a great blend of the two sub-genres. The first three tracks on the album are fairly uneventful, but they really dial up the weird and interesting aspects as the albums goes along. They really manage to keep a nice groove that is pleasing to the ear even when there is nothing “crazy” going on in a track.
The musicianship this band displays is very high level at all times. The drummer manages to keep very good grooves, add interesting accents and add a ton of things and hits that make it sound great. The guitar players play all kinds of eclectic riffs, rhythms and sounds to go across quite a few styles. The bass is at a very good volume in the mix and adds a bunch of value to his parts and the sound as a whole. Their vocalist really shines to me. He has a great singing voice, but also has a great angsty hardcore style mid scream. His low end screams are very nice as well, just wish he would use them more!
As a Cordyceps is the first song that really caught my ear and made me ask(in a great way) “What the hell is going in right now?” It starts of so calm and settled and slowly builds. Then the top comes off for a couple of quick passages to get a nice groove. Then out of almost nowhere the whole sound goes away before coming right back again. The constant shift of grooves and passages is really well done. The way they incorporate some chaotic and spastic rhythms really made me take notice during my first time through this track.
Athletic Worms starts off with this odd disco influenced straight ahead groove. This goes on for a bit before the groove gets an almost hardcore makeover. The riff is heavy with a nice flourish at the end of it. The next section is a mathcore chaotic high pitched guitar driven passage before the true breakdown is thrown the listeners way. This is how the track ends! It may be the shortest full track on the album, but damn it is packed full of material.
Perpetual Drone Monkeys is my favorite track on this album. It starts off with a sample of what sounds like a radio breaking up or the frequency being messed with. The first thing after this is a soft passage with high pitched singing lightly. This builds slowly but surely into a chaotic and frantic passage! Directly after this their is almost a yelled chant that transforms into a blast beat driven angry low growl and pissed off guitar. Those are my favorite parts of the track. Plus the breakdown to end the track is also great!
Benthos gave us their sophomore album and really delivered on it. I think this is a very nice step up for them and I would definitely give this an 8.5/10 on my progressive genre rating scale. I will be giving this many more listens and look forward to more of their music! As always don’t forget to stream and even buy their music if you like it!
