Buffalo’s premiere death metal trio Lacerate put out their second EP “Anabolic” yesterday April 20th. The debut was a solid start, but man oh man this release. The boys went further into death metal territory, finally adding some blast beats and tremolo riffs. There’s even more nastier, filthier grooves. The artwork is so disgusting and vile, all while being cool as fuck. How can you not enjoy the band name being spelled out using organs? Cool and brutal as can be.
They’re not gonna blow you away with speed. Lacerate focuses on grooves, rhythms and well more of that. Kaleb’s bass playing and vocals are absolutely stellar. I can hear he’s a lot more confident in his voice and has more parts this time around. It’s like hearing a young John McEntee. Consistently low, and doesn’t leave that range at all. That’s what I love in my death growls. If you like a vocalist with a diverse range this isn’t for you. If you like a vocalist with a brutal, low range this is absolutely calling you.
Jack’s guitar riffs are absolutely menacing and perfectly match Logan’s spirited drumming. They’re all under 21 (for now) and only going to keep getting better. I’ve been a fan of them and a friend of them since my band’s debut show. They were on the bill and absolutely floored me. That said, I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground. I waited until this beast dropped yesterday and was well worth the wait.
Lacerate’s no nonsense approach to a heavier version of death metal is very inspirational. “Anabolic” grabs you by the throat and slams you down on the ground like a choke slam. It is all killer and absolutely zero filler. Their potential is very high and are an exciting band. If you don’t know this band (there is a very good chance you don’t especially outside of the Buffalo area) it’s time to get familiar with them.
