Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti is pleased to announce a collaborative effort with local law enforcement agencies across the county to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. This initiative aims to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities related to impaired driving by intensifying both enforcement and educational efforts across New York State.
From Friday, April 18th, through Sunday, April 20th, 2025, law enforcement officers will be out in force as part of the statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign. This focused effort will work to deter impaired driving by increasing patrol visibility, discouraging reckless behavior, and promoting responsible decision-making among drivers.
Timed to coincide with heightened marijuana use and related activities surrounding the 4/20 period, the campaign is part of a broader, year-round initiative supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. In addition to key holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day Weekend, July 4th, and Labor Day, this campaign also targets high-risk periods like the Super Bowl and the winter holiday season.
While New York State has made significant strides in reducing alcohol and drug-related fatalities through ongoing STOP-DWI campaigns, impaired driving remains a leading cause of preventable deaths. The continued focus on high-visibility patrols and public education is crucial to further reduce these incidents, and enhancing road safety for all. Sheriff Filicetti and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office urge all drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel.
If you plan to consume alcohol or any impairing substances, please designate a sober driver, use public transportation, a taxi, or arrange for a ride-sharing service. Together, we can work toward preventing tragedies and saving lives.
