Five people were arrested late Wednesday night after a failed attempt by four to enter the United States illegally near Youngstown via the Niagara River.

According to reports by Niagara Falls Border Patrol Agents and Lewiston Police, four individuals were seen at approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday crossing from Canada on a raft. Earlier in the evening, Officer Batista of the Lewiston Police Department had seen an out-of-state vehicle in the vicinity and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The four individuals who had traversed the river were later seen getting into the out-of-state vehicle. A second traffic stop was initiated and all five occupants were arrested by Border Patrol, although one person had attempted to flee.

Border Patrol stated, “this was a great example of teamwork through a whole of government approach with assistance from the Buffalo Office of Field Operations and our Operation Stonegarden partner, the Lewiston Police Department.”

Border patrol asks that any suspicious border activity to the U.S. Border Patrol, Buffalo Sector be reported at 1-800-331-0353.
