The self titled debut album from tech death band Hypaethral dropped a few weeks ago and took some time to digest. It’s evident in our website name but the last few years I’ve drifted away from tech death. It’s not as heavy in some instances. Some bands are using the same exact programs/patches and feels too robotic. Sometimes though, there’s some diamonds in the rough that temporarily spark my love for the genre. Hypaethral reminded me there are some good technical death metal bands and that some DO stand out. I am here to spread the gospel of Hypaethral.

If you enjoy the obnoxious styles of Archspire paired with Obscura like songwriting quality you would get this newcomer’s sound. There’s plenty of runs on here that make my fingers hurt, but the riffs/licks are tasty as fuck. This isn’t shred to shred, there’s a lot of cool sections in here guitar wise that perked my guitar playing ears. There are some shreddy leads but never failed to include melody on every one. It’s a musical treat to your ears on each guitar solo. There’s some cool clean sections to break up the musical frenzy which is always welcome. It gets a little jazzy and progressive sometimes too. While the band goes pretty bonkers, there’s some cool grooves on the album too. Don’t be spooked just because of the death metal sub-genre it is, it’s a stellar debut.

The vocals are pretty good and more mid ranged. They’re consistent, heavy and audible. The rhythms are locked in and need to be for the bass and drums in a style like this. Lots of tempo changes, changing of moods and some complex sections demand super tight rhythms. The self titled album is a good mix of everything that encompasses technical death metal. This beast is out on all streaming platforms for your listening pleasures. Ascend your arpeggiated notes into shred heaven with this debut!
