By Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz

As the lazy days of summer continue here in Erie County, residents and visitors to our region should be reminded of the significant investments we’ve made in our public parks system, which includes two golf courses, two beaches and a campground. My administration remains committed to improving and enhancing the more than 12,000 acres of property that make up the Erie County Parks System.

The ideal summer in Western New York wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of our beautiful county parks or beaches. The efforts we’ve made to install inclusive playgrounds in all five of Erie County’s heritage parks has allowed us to bring children of all abilities together and provide a great experience for everyone, including grandparents, parents and other caregivers. The investment of over $3.5 million for these dedicated play spaces that are fully accessible and inviting to people with disabilities will result in numerous benefits for our entire community.

As a general reminder, all county parks are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until dusk and shelter reservations at all parks are available from May 15 through Oct. 15. More information about our various parks and what activities are available at each location can be found by visiting www.erie.gov/parks.

The Grover Cleveland and Elma Meadows golf courses have been significantly improved in recent years. Information about both courses, including how you can access our tee-time reservation system, can be found by visiting www.erie.gov/parks/golf.

Upgrades have also been made at our campground at Sprague Brook Park, including the addition of more tent and RV sites. To learn more about renting a campsite, visit www.erie.gov/parks/reservations.

Bennett and Wendt beaches have also benefited from recent improvements and upgrades to help provide ideal locations to rest and relax. The sunsets that can be viewed from both beaches are some of the best on the Great Lakes. To learn more about each beach you can visit www.erie.gov/parks/-bennett-beach and www.erie.gov/parks/wendt-park.

The Erie County Parks System is considered to be one of the finest in New York State. I encourage everyone to spend some time reconnecting with nature right in your own backyard. Investing in our parks, forests, golf courses, campground and beaches allows for all of us to enjoy these public spaces today and for generations to come. Summer is truly a great season in Erie County and I hope that yours is a safe and enjoyable one.
