WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Morelle announced today his co-sponsorship of the Social Security 2100 Act, a landmark piece of legislation to protect Social Security for millions of Americans. This action comes as extremist Republicans continue to push for cuts to the program.

“After a lifetime of hard work, every American deserves the promise of financial security and peace of mind in their retirement. Sadly, for too many people, that promise is quickly fading away,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “As extremist Republicans continue their efforts to dismantle Social Security and rip away seniors’ hard-earned benefits, it’s more important than ever that we fight back. That’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor the Social Security 2100 Act and ensure the long-term viability of this essential program that serves as a lifeline for so many in our community.”

With Social Security set to become insolvent by the year 2034, this legislation takes common-sense steps to bolster overall benefits, counter existing threats and harmful changes to these programs, and ensure the system is financially secure through the year 2100 and beyond, by:

  • Increasing benefits for ALL social security beneficiaries for the first time in 50 years.
  • Improving Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) to reflect inflation seniors face.
  • Ensuring no one retires into poverty after a lifetime of hard work.
  • Increasing access to benefits for children living with grandparents or other relatives.
  • Ending the 5-month waiting period to receive disability benefits.

Congressman Morelle’s support for the Social Security 2100 Actis a part of his ongoing efforts to lower costs for seniors and protect the programs they rely on. To learn more about the Congressman’s work, visit his website here.
