A tour boat in the Lockport Caves and Underground Boat ride capsized this morning just before 11:30 a.m.

Early reports indicated that some of the 36 passengers aboard the underground boat may have been trapped, but other reports indicate that all 36 were successfully brought above ground and none were severely injured.

The Lockport Police Department issued a press release at 12:19 p.m. via their Facebook page saying that the “incident is still ongoing.” A representative of the police department said just before 2 p.m. that that was the most up-to-date information available and that a press conference was being prepared by Lockport’s mayor for 3 p.m.

The underground boat ride is a literal ride on a boat through a man-made tunnel that was dug approximately 150 years ago. The boat rides themselves started in 1977, according to the company’s website.

We’ll bring you more details when they’re available.
