NEW YORK — Casey Mittelstadt scored the deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout after scoring the game-tying goal in the third period, and the Buffalo Sabres stayed alive in the Stanley Cup Playoff race by defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

The Sabres moved within four points of the New York Islanders for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference and have three games remaining, including against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.
