There have been 25 storm-related deaths in Erie County and one in Niagara County, according to records revealed by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

It is highly expected that the number will increase as roads are cleared and currently unreachable places become reachable.

There were 23 deaths in Western New York during the Blizzard of ’77.

Poloncarz noted that while the Blizzard of ’77 was a three-day event — compared to the two-day storm that occurred this year — the ferocity of this year’s storm was worse.
