On December 21, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine visited Washington, D.C. for meetings with President Biden and to address a joint session of Congress. Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26), a member of the bipartisan Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, released the following statement regarding the visit:

Higgins said, “Putin’s unwarranted attack on the innocent people of Ukraine is not only a threat to that nation but to the world. For exactly 300 days now President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people have not only endured the merciless attacks by Russia but have persisted and prevailed in the fight to maintain their homeland and democracy. The United States stands with our allies. We will continue to work with international partners to support aid and equipment for Ukraine – a world that embraces freedom and democracy depends on it.”

President Zelenskyy’s visit, made following an invitation by President Biden, includes a bilateral discussion between the two Presidents as well as meetings with members of the Biden Administration’s national security team and Cabinet, concluding with an address to Congress. This is Zelenskyy’s second visit to the White House, but the first since the beginning of the invasion. Congress is expected to consider an omnibus package including additional aid to Ukraine this week.

Congressman Higgins’ Western New York district is home to a strong and active Ukrainian American community.
