On May 22, 2022, at 7:00 P.M., Troopers out of SP Jamestown responded to Conewango Creek for a canoe that overturned, and one occupant is unaccounted for.
Further investigation revealed that multiple people were canoeing on Conewango Creek and one of the canoes rolled over and the operator, Michael T. Leary, 46 of Pine Plains, NY was unaccounted for. The NYSP Underwater Recovery Unit and the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team with local fire agencies searched for Leary. Leary was located on May 23, 2022, deceased. Leary was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Leary was transported to Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
