LOCKPORT — An announcement this morning from Transit Drive-In owner Rick Cohen that he was trying to fulfill the last wish of a dying friend has grown legs.

Cohen posted to Facebook this morning that he is making efforts to get a private pre-release screening of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” for George Root, a friend of not only Cohen’s but of this writer — and a former contributor for All WNY News.

Cohen’s post — available below in its entirety — explains that Root is currently in the ICU at Roswell where he is living out what’s expected to be his last days.

But Root is and always has been a huge fan of Godzilla. And he’d really like to see the latest installment in the movie franchise, but doesn’t expect to live long enough to see it. So Cohen is trying to pull some strings with movie executives.

Cohen’s efforts caught the attention of both local and national news media — and thousands on social media. As of this writing, his Facebook post has 294 likes, 77 comments and 298 shares.

Meanwhile on Twitter, #GodzillaforGeorge is trending.

On a personal note, George Root has been one of my best friends. I visited him on Sunday and while he is not the strong rough and tumble man he used to be, he’s strong enough to hold out for Godzilla.

Let’s see if we can help make this happen. And Long Live The King.
