AMHERST TIMES: County Legislature honors longtime resident for service to community

Schlifke’s work in public service began in 1985 with her election to the Williamsville Village Board.

As a trustee, Schlifke rewrote the Traffic and Parks Code, was instrumental in the installation of new street signs, and advocated for historical and environmental preservation in the community.

Her efforts included: spearheading the purchase of the old Amherst Police Station, since repurposed into Village Hall; obtaining a grant to finish the preservation of the historical Meeting House; securing grants for the construction of the Pavilion in Island Park; and the purchase of the old Conrail section of tracks for the creation of the Leigh Memorial Trail and Bike Path and Williamsville Train Station.

Additionally, Schlifke served as a liaison to the Traffic and Safety Committee, Environmental Commission, Beautification Committee and Parks Committee. She also served on the Planning and Architectural Review Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Conrail Property Committee.

Schlifke is a member of the Williamsville Historical Society and has worked as the treasurer since 1999. She continues to be an active voice in the Williamsville community by participating in the Village Community Development Plan, which is working to create a more walkable and pedestrian friendly Village of Williamsville.

“After over 50 years of service no one deserves this award more than Carolyn Schlifke,” Loughran said.
