MACHIAS — A fast-acting New York State Trooper saved a one-year-old child from choking Wednesday evening.

According to New York State Police, Trooper Aaron Kawado was traveling on State Route 16 at approximately 8:15 p.m. when he noticed a vehicle abruptly pull to the shoulder of the roadway and the occupants of the vehicle quickly exit.

Trooper Kawado responded to the vehicle and was immediately met by a male subject carrying a one-year old baby. The male subject was yelling that he needed help, and the baby was choking.

The Trooper immediately took the baby and performed back blows which dislodged the object from the baby’s throat. Delevan Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and evaluated the baby. The baby, whose name was not released by NYSP, was healthy and the Father signed off with the medical personnel.
