Canisius College campusBUFFALO, N.Y. — The Canisius athletic department had another strong showing in the classroom, with 19 varsity programs boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2018 spring semester, the College announced Tuesday. Fifteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school’s 342 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.26 in the spring session.

The spring semester also saw 22 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the term. Those 22 student-athletes represent nine different teams. Additionally, 243 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 71 percent of the College’s student-athlete population.

The women’s soccer team led all Golden Griffin programs in the spring semester with a 3.64 team grade point average. The women’s cross country/track and hockey programs tied for second overall in the spring semester with a 3.51 team GPA, followed by women’s swimming and diving (3.46), women’s lacrosse (3.39) and men’s cross country/track (3.38). Rowing (3.36), men’s swimming and diving (3.35), men’s lacrosse (3.31) were all better than 3.30 for the spring semester, while volleyball (3.28), men’s soccer (3.28) women’s basketball (3.25) and softball (3.24) finishing higher than 3.20 in the classroom. Overall, men’s and women’s cross country/track recorded a 3.47 team GPA for the academic year, followed by women’s soccer (3.45), hockey (3.41) and women’s swimming and diving (3.36).

A total of 196 Canisius student-athletes were named to the MAAC Honor Roll for 2017-18, which is 13 more than last year and 62 percent of the student-athletes eligible for the honor. Twenty-three hockey players received Atlantic Hockey Conference (AHC) All-Academic Team accolades, with forward David Baskerville earning AHC Student-Athlete of the Year honors, marking the sixth-straight season a Canisius student-athlete has made the list.
