“We’re once again giving back to the community that has embraced this program since it was first launched in 2016,” said Jennifer White, marketing and communications executive for Reddy Bikeshare. “This week, we want to provide even more incentives and opportunities for folks to get out, ride a bike and enjoy the beautiful summer weather we’re having.”

Reddy Bikeshare invites interested bicyclists of all experience levels to join this week’s East Side Bike Club ride on Saturday, July 21, to commemorate the program’s launch two years ago, as well as the program’s most recent station expansion to 1423 Fillmore Avenue at the Community Action Organization. The ride is free and open to anyone and travels through many areas of the city often introducing riders to new places and bike trails. The group offers rides of various distances to encourage all riders regardless of experience, teaches bike safety and ‘rules of the road’ and connects with other community group rides throughout the city.

“Watching the number of Slow Roll riders grow from week to week, we noticed the lack of diversity was not truly representative of our city. Taking a look at possible reasons for it and ways to address some of the obstacles is how East Side Bike Club was formed,” said George Johnson, Founder, East Side Bike Club, “Our goal is to get more folks on bikes enjoying the fellowship and health benefits that come along with it, and our mission is to connect the community and promote a healthy and active lifestyle through safe cycling. We’re so excited to see a new Reddy Bikeshare station on Fillmore Avenue, just up the road from where our ride begins – now get on a bike and join us!”

Reddy Bikeshare is also offering a gift for folks who can’t make Saturday’s bike ride or any of the above events. $2.00 trial memberships are available with promo code REDDYTURNS2 when you sign up July 16 – July 21.

Those interested can visit www.Reddybikeshare.com or download the Social Bicycles app to redeem a membership and enter the code during the payment process.

Independent Health spokesperson Frank J. Sava said the health plan is very pleased with its partnership with Reddy Bikeshare. “Together, we’re working toward creating a culture of health in Western New York by supporting recreation and exercise through bicycling,” said Sava. “We remain dedicated to improving health and wellness in our region, and enhancing our growing reputation as a bike-friendly community.”

According to Jennifer White, milestones for the second full year of operation include:

More than 3,400 total riders
More than 50,000 total miles traveled
More than 2 million calories burned.

Cumulative statistics since the program first launched on July 21, 2016 are:

More 7,400 riders
More than 90,000 miles traveled
More than 3.6 million calories burned

White also said Delaware Park, Bidwell Parkway and Canalside are still some of the most popular stations to pick up a Reddy bike, but other stations have become increasingly more in demand like the Roosevelt Plaza station near the Electric Tower, and the Canisius College station, even after the semester has ended.

The 35 most active riders of the program have logged over 100 miles of riding since registering, with the most active member traveling 539 total miles in the last year.

The Reddy Bikeshare program in Buffalo officially launched on July 21, 2016, with 200 “smart” bicycles with GPS capabilities located at 40 stations throughout the city.
