AMHERST TIMES

Each year, Scharf’s celebrates the Anniversary of the saving of Scharf’s, the relocation, and the founder’s (Margarete and Karl Scharf) and the current owner, Gerald’s (Jerry’s) birthday. This year is special as Jerry hits 60.
Event starts under the tent at 5pm with live music at 7pm by the Auslanders. German food and beverages will be served inside and out.
Scharf’s nearly went out of business in 2012 as the public perception of the safety in the East Side neighborhood, where Scharf’s Schiller Park Restaurant originated, became worse. A news story and a fundraiser helped get the word out and helped keep the long time favorite in business. In 2014, Scharf’s moved to a bigger new location in West Seneca. With a huge grounds to work with, outdoor festivals became possible. They now hold 3 per year, One each in the months of July, August, and September.
July 6th marks the first of Scharf’s 2018 Sommer Festival Series. Bierfest happens on August 25, with free craft beer tastings throughout the afternoon by local brewers. The Kickoff to Oktoberfest Party wraps up the series on September 15. Bierfest and the Oktoberfest kickoff start at 4pm with live music by the Auslanders at 7pm. $7 cover charge for these events.
The restaurant was founded in 1967 by German immigrants, Margarete and Karl Scharf at 34 South Crossman in Buffalo’s Schiller Park neighborhood. Margarete affectionately referred to it as her little corner of the world. Jerry relocated the business in 2014 to the former Deerhead Inn on Clinton Street in West Seneca.
