PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The New York Attorney General’s Office today announced that the office will sponsor a gun buyback in Plattsburgh on Tuesday, June 26th, as part of the office’s statewide gun buyback program in cities across New York. The buyback is co-sponsored by the City of Plattsburgh Police Department.
The Attorney General’s Office will be accepting, with no questions asked, working and non-working unloaded weapons in exchange for compensation on site. The Attorney General’s office will offer money in the form of prepaid debit cards when a gun is received by law enforcement officers. Prepaid debit cards with the appropriate amount will be issued after each unloaded gun is received and secured by the officers on-site. Free gun locks will also be available for attendees of the gun buyback.
Guns must be transported to the drop-off site unloaded, in the trunk of the vehicle, in a plastic or paper bag, or box. Both working and non-working firearms will be accepted, and there is no limit on the number of firearms an individual can turn in. Licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.
The Attorney General’s Office will be providing the following compensation by gift card for firearms turned in on site:
$25 for non-working or antique firearms
$50 for rifles and shotguns
$75 for handguns
$100 for assault weapons
$50 for rifles and shotguns

The New York Attorney General’s Office has sponsored more than a dozen gun buybacks statewide since 2013, which have resulted in over 1,800 firearms turned in.
The statewide gun buyback program is part of the office’s broader effort to keep New Yorkers safe from gun violence.
The Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force has focused on taking violent gun traffickers off our streets. The office developed Model Gun Show Procedures, a series of safety procedures for gun show operators in New York State, and announced new policies to help social media sites curb illegal sales of firearms on their platforms. In 2016, the Attorney General’s office released a first-of-its-kind analysis of tens of thousands of “crime guns” recovered by law enforcement, illustrating gun trafficking trends that undermine New York’s sensible laws.
