ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Plates were shut out by the Indianapolis Indians 8-0 Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Durham Bulls (Rays) open a three-game set with the Wings here Friday night at 7:05 p.m., with gates opening early at 5:30 p.m. and fireworks after the game.
The Indians scored first against Plates starting pitcher Dietrich Enns in the top of second inning after an RBI double from Wyatt Mathisen, making the score 1-0. Later in the inning, Max Moroff hit a two-run home run making the score 3-0.
The Indians added to their lead in the top of the third with a solo home run from Rochester native and Aquinas grad Christopher Bostick, making the score 4-0.
The Plates threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth after singles by Cameron Rupp and Wynston Sawyer and a walk by Taylor Motter. Indians starting pitcher J.T. Brubaker worked out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.
Enns was replaced by Jake Reed with two outs in the top of the fifth after RBI singles from Jose Osuna and Mathisen making the score 6-0. Later in the inning, Ryan Lavarnway hit an RBI single off Reed made the score 7-0. Reed walked the next batter, Pablo Reyes, with the bases loaded making the score 8-0.
Enns finished the game with 4.2 innings thrown, giving up nine hits, allowing eight earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Enns threw 85 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Reed was replaced by Alan Busenitz in the top of the seventh inning. Reed finished his outing with 1.1 innings thrown, allowing three hits and two walks.
Brubaker was replaced in the bottom of the seventh inning by Josh Smoker. Brubaker finished the day throwing 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Brubaker threw 98 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Busenitz was the most effective Plates pitcher of the day, working three scoreless innings allowing just a single while fanning two.
The Plates had baserunners in every inning but the third inning, but failed to score for the second time in the three-game set against the Indians.
The Indians out-hit the Plates 13-7.
