BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York State Education Department authorized Buffalo State to offer a new bachelor of science degree in environmental geography beginning in fall 2018. Environmental geography will be offered by the college’s Geography and Planning Department.
“Students with an interest in how humans impact processes and patterns in the natural environment will find what they’re looking for in this program,” said Kelly Frothingham, professor and chair of geography and planning and a stream-restoration specialist. “We also offer extensive opportunities for hands-on field work and undergraduate research.” Internships are also emphasized.
Environmental geography focuses on how humans affect, manage, and conserve the natural environment. In addition to studying human impact on water, soil, climate, and plant and animal communities, the program introduces students to the geographic tools used by geographers.
Technology such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing enables environmental specialists to collect, analyze, and interpret data that help to explain the complex relationships between humans and the environment. Successful completion of the program requires students to learn mapmaking, statistical methods, and research methods.
“According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in the environmental field are projected to continue to grow at a faster than average rate,” said Frothingham. “This degree will prepare students for careers in environmental analysis, natural areas preservation, outdoor and environmental education, and environmental assessment, monitoring, and restoration. Graduates will be prepared to work for local, state, and federal government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private environmental consulting firms.”
