ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings hung on to beat the Syracuse Chiefs 6-4 Wednesday night at Frontier Field. The teams meet in an 11:05 a.m. game Thursday morning, with Twins pitcher and former Wing Trevor May scheduled to make a rehab start for the Red Wings.
The Red Wings wasted no time giving starting pitcher Dietrich Enns a comfortable cushion as they pushed across five runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Zack Granite led off the bottom half of the first with a walk issued by Syracuse starter Tommy Milone. After a Ryan LaMarre single put a pair of runners on with no outs, Jake Cave pounded a ball into the right field corner for a triple, allowing both Granite and LaMarre to score on the play to give Rochester an early 2-0 lead. After Jermaine Curtis and Wynston Sawyer both walked to load the bases, Nick Buss doubled into the right field corner allowing for both Cave and Curtis to score, increasing the Wings lead to 4-0.
Milone was relieved after just a third of an inning. Milone allowed five runs on three hits and three walks. He threw 40 pitches, 21 were for strikes.
The big inning was capped off with a sacrifice fly from Leonardo Reginatto, scoring Sawyer for a 5-0 lead.
Syracuse struck back in the second after an infield error and single put a pair on with one out. An attempted double steal worked out in Syracuse’s favor after Curtis dropped the ball on the throw to third, allowing for both runners to advance on the play. An eventual sacrifice fly from Tuffy Gosewisch pushed across a run, cutting the Rochester lead to 5-1.
In the fifth, Syracuse made it a 5-2 game after Rafael Bautista blasted a home run over the centerfield fence.
DJ Baxendale came on in relief of Enns to begin the sixth inning. Enns went 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out four. He threw 80 pitches, 50 were for strikes.
Baxendale allowed a home run to Jacob Wilson to open the fifth inning, cutting the Wings’ lead to 5-3. After Baxendale issued a walk to Irving Falu, a passed ball and two wild pitches allowed Falu to score, leaving Rochester with a 5-4 lead.
Baxendale’s night was finished after throwing the sixth inning. He went 1.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two.
Luke Bard relieved Baxendale and worked 2.0 innings, allowing a hit and two walks.
Pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo’s one-out single in the eighth gave the Wings an insurance run and a 6-4 lead. The hit was the Wings’ first since the second inning.
Nick Anderson pitched the ninth, getting a strikeout and two nice defensive plays from Cave and Taylor Featherston. Anderson recorded his first Triple-A save.
Express Mart Thruway Cup Series: The Red Wings are now 5-5 in the season-long competition for the Thruway Cup.

NOTES: Jake Cave extended his hit streak to five games with a pair of extra base hits… Media reports indicate that Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia is expected to be with Pawtucket this weekend at Frontier Field, part of Pedroia’s rehab assignment from Boston…Twins GM Thad Levineand former Wings manager Mike Quade are in town for the Chiefs series.
