LAST TIME OUT
• The Canisius women’s lacrosse program scored early and often as it routed rival Niagara, 17-7 in the first round of the MAAC tournament last Saturday night at the Demske Sports Complex. 
• Senior Jen Reininger posted a career-best six goals to lead all scorers in the game. The Blue and Gold had three other players record four points, as senior Allie Stewart tallied four goals, junior Jourdan Roemer tallied a goal and three assists, while sophomore Bryar Cummings notched a pair of goals and assists.
• Canisius started the game hot, scoring the first three makers within the first three minutes, as Reininger and Cummings combined for the tallies. Niagara answered back scoring goals at the 23:08 and 21:53 marks to cut the Canisius lead to one.
• However the Blue and Gold took control and never looked back, scoring nine unanswered goals and holding the Purple Eagles scoreless for 27 minutes, before a Rachel MacCheyne goal at the 24:52 of the second half mark broke the run.
• All-told Canisius outscored the Purple Eagles 8-5 in the final frame, but the first-half advantage was enough as the team cruised to the 17-7 victory.
• The team received secondary scoring up and down its roster as well, as senior Lauren Smolensky finished with one goal and two assists, while freshman Miranda Malvaso posted a season-high two goals. Her sister Marissa Malvaso also recorded a point with an assist, meanwhile junior Kayla O’Connell recorded her first career-assist.
• Also finding the scoresheet was sophomore Rachel Ryan who tallied her sixth goal against the Purple Eagles this week.

SCOUTING CANISIUS
• The Golden Griffins continue their title defense on Thursday, as the team faces No. 1 seeded Marist in the MAAC Championship semifinal round. 
• Canisius and the MAAC has been led offensively by Jourdan Roemer, who comes into the contest with 78 points (47 goals and 31 assists). 
• Not far behind is Jen Reininger who has tallied 52 goals and nine assists for 61 points. 
• The Blue and Gold has also received goal scoring from Allie Stewart (27 goals) and three assists), Lauren Smolenksy (11 goals and 15 assists) and Bryar Cummings (20 goals and four assist) 
• Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso have continued to get stronger with each game, as the freshmen have been strong complimentary pieces in their first year.
• Marissa Malvaso has tallied 12 goals and three assists, while Miranda Malvaso has tallied five goals. 
• Rachel Ryan has also posted career-best offensive numbers, having totaled 10 goals this season. |
• Reininger, aside from goal scoring, has been all over the stat sheet, leading the team in ground balls with 59, draw controls with 103 and caused turnovers with 27.
• Reininger is ranked 5th nationally with 5.72 draw controls per game, and ranked third in the nation in ground balls per contest with a mark of 3.28.
• Rebecca VanLaeken has been one of the nation’s best goaltenders, ranking third in the nation in saves per game with an 11.83 mark. 
• She is also ranked first in the NCAA in total saves, setting a new Canisius program single season record, with 213
• VanLaeken comes into the game with a 11.58 goals against average and a .510 save percentage. 

NOTING THE RED FOXES 
• Marist goes into the MAAC Tournament as the number one seed for the first time since 2014 and hosts for the first time since 2013.
• The Red Foxes will play fourth seed Canisius for their semi-final match up. If they win, they will face either Monmouth or Fairfield in the championship.
• Hailey Wagner leads the NCAA in draw controls per game with 9.13. 
• Delaney Galvin has had a fantastic start to her career, ranking fourth in save percentage (.537) and sixth in saves per game (11.44). 
• Samantha Mehalick has been on fire as of late and ranks tenth in the nation in goals per game (3.75).
• The freshman class has been a key part of the success for this season.  They account for 26% of points on the season. 
• Between freshman Delaney Galvin, Kelly George and Camille Renaud, there are five MAAC Rookie of the Week wins and three MAAC Defensive POW wins.

KEEPING UP WITH TRADITION
• The Blue and Gold qualified for its 11th-straight semifinal game and is fighting for the right to play for the MAAC title for the seventh-straight season.
• A trip to Saturday’s title game would be the team’s ninth all-time appearance, as Canisius and Fairfield lead the MAAC in championship games. 
• Canisius has been dominant in the tournament as well. Dating back to its first championship season in 2011 Canisius is 14-1 in MAAC tournament games 

SERIES HISTORY VS. MARIST
• Wednesday will be the 29th meeting between the two squads, as Marist holds a 16-12 advantage over the Blue and Gold.
• It was a slow start in the series history for Canisius, as the team dropped the first eight games and didn’t record its first win over Marist until 2006.
• However Canisius has won the last six meetings, including MAAC tournament games in 2014 and 2015.
• The Blue and Gold holds a 4-3 advantage over Marist in postseason play and has kept it close when playing at the Demske Sports Complex, with a 5-5 mark. 
• Marist however has its greatest advantage when playing in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as the Red Foxes have a 8-3 record against Canisius at home.

REININGER AND ROEMER HIGHLIGHT ALL-MAAC AWARDS
• Canisius was well represented during the MAAC awards banquet but Jen Reininger and Jourdan Roemerhighlighted the night, winning conference midfielder of the year and offensive player of the year, respectively.
• Along with those awards the Griffs offensive duo, were named to the All-MAAC First Team.
• Joining Roemer and Reininger was Rebecca VanLaeken who earned All-MAAC Second Team accolades andMarissa Malvaso, who garnered All-Rookie team honors. 
• Reininger and Roemer’s honors are the fifth time in program history that the Blue and Gold earned offensive player of year and midfielder of the year in the same season.
• From 2012 to 2015 Canisius reeled off four-straight years of earning those two awards.
