CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius tripped up in non-conference action by visiting Kent State, 10-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Flashes improve to 25-12 overall, while the Golden Griffins drop to 21-15 on the season.
Kent State, who scored in six of the nine innings, got its first two runs in the second inning as redshirt senior Reilly Hawkins scored on an interference call on Canisius followed by an infield single by junior Josh Hollander to plate fellow classmate Pete Schuler to lead 2-0.
The Golden Flashes added two more tallies in the third on back-to-back doubles by Hawkins and Schuler, pushing their lead to 5-0.
In the fourth, the visitors tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly as the Blue and Gold plated their lone run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by senior Nick Capitano scoring redshirt senior Christ Conley.
Kent State’s offense kept flowing with another run in the fifth, two more in the seventh and one final run in the eighth on a RBI single by freshman Greg Lewandowski, a sacrifice fly by Hawkins, a bases-loaded walk by senior Brad Hamilton and RBI groundout by freshman Michael Turner to cruise to the 10-1 victory.
Freshman Ryan Lane received his fourth start on the bump of the year for Kent State throwing five innings of three hit ball, allowing one run and striking out two before making way to four Golden Flashes relievers.
Canisius sent junior Andrew Kneussle to the hill. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., native, labored through 2.2 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits, managing to sit down three batters via strikeout. A combination of four Griffs’ pitchers entered from the bullpen to wrap the game up.
GAME NOTES
• With his one walk on Tuesday, senior Liam Wilson‘s has reached base in all 35 games that he’s played in this season and 37 times in his last 38 games dating back to last year.
• Wilson’s 18 game hitting streak ended.
• Conley’s on-base streak now stands at 26 straight games with his one base on balls Tuesday.
