BUFFALO, N.Y. — Prospect shortstop Willy Adames hit for the cycle and drove in three to lead the Durham Bulls to an 8-1 victory over the Bisons on Monday night from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Brandon Snyder and Jake Bauers added home runs to lead the Bulls to the win.
Ranked as the #2 prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays system by MLB.com, Adames began his night with a first-inning double before getting the single out of the way in the fifth inning. On that second trip on the bases, the shortstop scored on Jason Coats‘ RBI-double to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.
After Snyder led off the sixth with a home run and two more Bulls got on base, Adames banged a triple off the centerfield wall just to the right of the 395 sign. Instead of kicking back to Bisons centerfield Anthony Alford, the ball fell straight down to the base of the wall. By the time Alford could retrieve the ball, Adames slid in easily at third for the two-run triple and a 5-0 Bulls lead.
With just the home run left, Adames combined with Jake Bauers on back-to-back jacks in the three-run Durham eighth inning that put the game out of reach. By accomplishing the feat, Adames becomes the first Bisons opponent to hit for the cycle since Frank Catalanotta did for the Toledo Mud Hens on July 19, 1998.
In a game that was moved up an hour from its initially scheduled 7:05 p.m. start because of incoming weather, timing also proved to be a factor in the game’s first run. With two on and one out in the bottom of the second, Durham’s catcher Adam Moore worked to a full count against Bisons starter Joe Biagini. The veteran righty was then called for a clock violation, which constituted ball four to Moore. Three pitches later, Jake Cronenworth chopped a slow roller that Biagini was forced to attempt to field and flip with his glove. The ball glanced off the mitt for an error, giving Durham the 1-0 lead.
Buffalo tallied its lone run in the sixth inning when Roemon Fields led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second when a Forrest Snow pick off attempt went awry. Fields moved around the rest of the diamond on a pair of groundouts.
Durham’s Snow went six innings in the contest, strikeout out nine Bisons batters.
With heavy rain in the forecast, the Bisons and Bulls will attempt to play game two of their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
