UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS


MOUNT PLEASANT, M.I. — The University at Buffalo softball team (13-18, 5-4 MAC) dropped the opening game of a three-game series on the road at Central Michigan on Friday afternoon, 10-2. The Bulls led through three innings but the Chippewas scored seven in the fourth to take the game in five innings.
The Bulls squandered a pair of hits in the first inning and the Chippewas took advantage as they were able to take the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk came back to hurt the Bulls as she came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center field to give the home team the 1-0 lead through one.
After a scoreless second inning, the Bulls were able to get on the board with a pair of runs in the third to take the 2-1 lead. Leandra Jew started the rally with a double to left center and Anna Aguon followed with a single to right center before Jenelle Martinez plated a pair of runners with the double to left center field.
The Chippewas took command of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as they were able to score seven runs on only three hits and three errors by the Bulls.
With the 8-2 lead heading into the fifth, Buffalo tried to rally as Jew and Martinez reached base but they weren’t able to score either runner. The Chippewas then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game in the fifth with the 10-2 win over the Bulls.
Jew and Aguon each recorded two hits in the loss while Martinez added to her team-best RBI total as she notched two RBI to give her 26 on the season. Jessica Goldyn also notched a hit in the loss as she is now batting a team-best .410 on the season.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed until Sunday as the two teams will now play in a Sunday doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.
