LAST TIME OUT

• No. 7 Virginia outscored the Canisius women’s lacrosse program 12-4 in the second half, as the Cavaliers defeated the Golden Griffins, 18-8 Wednesday evening in Charlottesville, Va. The loss snapped the Blue and Gold’s three-game win streak, as the team dropped to 4-5.
• Canisius got off to a fast start in the game, rebounding from a 1-0 Virginia lead by scoring four-straight goals, making it 4-1 with 22 minutes remaining in the opening frame.
• The Cavaliers slowly started to gain the momentum throughout the first half however, going on a 5-0 run and taking a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.
• Canisius scored the opening goal of the second half, as freshman Marissa Malvaso tallied her seventh of the season to close the UVA advantage to 6-5. However, the one-goal deficit was as close as the Griffs would get to the Cavaliers, as Virginia tallied 12 goals after intermission to secure the victory.
• Senior Jen Reininger led way offensively for Canisius, as she tallied four points including three goals and an assist. She also led the team with nine draw controls. Junior Jourdan Roemer added a pair of goals and an assist to the losing cause, while fellow junior Kayla O’Connell paced the Griffs with a career-high six ground balls.
• A pair of Cavaliers led the way for Virginia, as Avery Shoemaker tallied three goals and one assist and Sammy Mueller notched a pair of goals and to go with two assists.
• Senior Rebecca VanLaeken tallied double-digit saves for the seventh time this season after she made 16 stops in the loss. Junior Ellen Newton also saw game action as she recorded two saves.
• Virginia controlled the pace of play, outshooting the Griffs 43-16, however the Blue and Gold managed to make major strides in an area it has struggled with at times this season, as the team bested UVA in draw controls, 14-13

SCOUTING CANISIUS
• The Golden Griffins (4-5) finish up its spring break road trip on Friday, as the squad most recently dropped a contest to No. 7 UVA, 18-8.
• Canisius enters the game against the Gaels on Friday, with a 4-5 overall record and a 1-0 conference mark.
• The Blue and Gold had its win streak snapped at three games, with the loss to the Cavaliers.
• The month of March has been a strong one for the Griffs as the team has gone 3-2 so far.
• Canisius has been led offensively by Jourdan Roemer, who comes into the contest with 34 points (20 goals and 14 assists).
• Not far behind is the team/’s leading goal scorer, Jen Reininger, who has 30 points with 25 goals and five assists.
• The Blue and Gold have also received goal scoring from Allie Stewart (12 goals), Lauren Smolenksy (four goals and seven assists) and Bryar Cummings (seven goals and one assist).
• Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso have continued to get stronger with each game, as the freshmen have been strong complimentary pieces in their first year.
• Marissa Malvaso has tallied seven goals and two assists, while Miranda Malvaso has tallied three goals.
• Reininger, aside from goal scoring, has been all over the stat sheet, leading the team in ground balls with 36, draw controls with 47 and caused turnovers with 16.
• Reininger is ranked fifth in the nation in ground balls with a 4.00 average.
• Rebecca VanLaeken has been one of the nation’s best goaltenders, ranking fourth in the country in saves per game with 11.63. She has a 4-5 record this season with a 12.1 goals against average and a .498 save percentage.

SCOUTING IONA
• The Gaels come into the contest with a 5-5 overall record and an 0-1 conference mark.
• Iona were hard-luck losers in its opening MAAC game as the Griffs’ rival, Niagara, bested the Gaels, 13-12 on March 24.
• Niagara had an 11-5 lead with just 15:24 remaining in the half, however the Gaels cut the Purple Eagle advantage to 13-12, outscoring Niagara 7-2 down the stretch, but was unable to find the equalizer.
• The loss extended Iona’s loss-streak to three games, having dropped previous games to Davidson (10-8) and Brown (10-6).
• The Gaels are led offensively by a pair of players that have accrued over 20 points so far this season.
• Pamela Giordano leads the team with 27 points (26 goals and one assist).
• Jenna Tolzman is not far behind with 23 goals and two assists for 25 points.
• Tolzmann also leads the team with 17 draw controls, Meanwhile Shannon McCaffery paces Iona with 38 ground balls.
• McCaffery has started and played in every game for the Gaels between the pipes, having tallied a 5-5 record, posted a 8.96 goals against average and a .508 save percentage.
• McCaffery’s save percentage is ranked 14th in the nation, while her goals against average (8.96) is 12th best in division I.

SERIES HISTORY VS. IONA
• Friday’s game is the 14th all-time meeting between the Gaels and Griffs.
• The Blue and Gold has had considerable success against Iona, having posted a 13-0 record.
• Canisius has seen success both at the Koessler Athletic Center and in New Rochelle, N.Y., having posted flawless 7-0 and 6-0 records, respectively.

SUCCESS UNDER PRESSURE
• The Canisius women’s lacrosse team has a different look this season due to a number of factors but success hasn’t stopped.
• The Blue and Gold have played in four games decided by one goal, and the Griffs have won three of those contests.
• Canisius is also 1-0 in games decided by 2-3 goals.


MAAC MASTERS
• The Blue and Gold have posted flawless 8-0 MAAC regular season records for the last three seasons, dating back to 2015.
• Canisius has continued its streak into the 2018 season as the team is now 1-0 in MAAC play, making it 25 straight conference wins.
• Prior to that the Griffs haven’t posted a sub-.500 win percentage in conference play in 10 years.
• The last time Canisius posted more losses than wins in MAAC action was in 2007 with a 2-5 mark.
• Canisius has posted flawless MAAC records four times total, with three 8-0 marks and posted a 6-0 record in 2013.
• Since 2008 the Griffs have compiled a 58-10 record in conference play, which amounts to an .852 win percentage.
