Canisius men’s lacrosse continues its three-game road swing Tuesday with a mid-week matchup against No. 1 Albany.
Opening faceoff for the contest against the top-ranked Great Danes is set for 3 p.m. at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.
Scouting Canisius
• The Golden Griffins (3-2) head into the second game of their three-game road swing looking to get back in the win column after opening the trip with an 18-5 setback at Colgate on Saturday.
• Senior Connor Kearnan continues to pace the Canisius attack, leading the team in both assists (18) and goals (28). Kearnan enters Tuesday’s matchup ranked among the top seven players nationally in both points (5.6/7th) and assists (3.6/5th) per contest.
• Sophomore Carter Stefaniak is second on the squad in points (16) as he is tied for the team lead in goals (11) and is third in assists (5).
• Senior Ryan McKee and sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault are tied with Stefaniak for the team lead with 11 goals. Boissonneault leads the team in shooting percentage, finding the back of the net on 11 of the 21 shots he has taken thus far in 2018 (.524).
• Sophomore long-stick midfielder Reece Eddy has been a force on both ends of the field as he leads the team with 23 ground balls and nine caused turnovers while also chipping in two goals.
• Senior Liam Ganzhorn has started all five games in goal for Canisius. He has posted a 13.00 goals against average and .420 save percentage in 240 minutes of action.
• Canisius has made the most of its shot attempts this season as it ranks first in the nation in shooting percentage (.393). The Griffs have shot better than 33 percent in all five of its games this season.
Colgate Knocks Off Canisius in Non-Conference Matchup
• Griffin Brown tallied seven goals to lead Colgate to an 18-5 victory over Canisius Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y.
• Brown’s career day highlighted a high-powered Raiders attack that saw seven players record two or more points in the contest. Dunkin Hoskinson tallied four goals while Sam Cleveland scored one goal and dished out a team-high three assists.
• Sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault recorded his first career hat trick while senior Connor Kearnan chipped in a goal and three assists for the Golden Griffins.
• Sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault recorded his first career hat trick as he posted multiple goals in a game for the fifth straight contest to open the season.
• Senior Connor Kearnan moved into sole possession of 13th place on the program’s all-time scoring chart with his four-point effort on Saturday, giving him 125 points for his career. Kearnan also recorded four or more points in a game for the third time this season.
• Sophomore Reece Eddy led Canisius with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
• Senior Liam Ganzhorn recorded double-digit saves in a game for the second time this season and the 16th occasion during his career as he finished with 12 saves.
Scouting Albany
• The last remaining undefeated team in Division I, top-ranked Albany carries a 6-0 record into Tuesday’s matchup after beginning America East play with a 21-5 victory over No. 12 Vermont at home on Saturday.
• Tewaaraton Award candidate senior Connor Fields leads the nation in both points (7.67) and assists (4.33) per game to highlight a Great Danes attack that ranks first in the nation in scoring offense (15.83).
• Freshman Tehoka Nanticoke is second on the team in scoring with 27 points (17g, 10a). Nanticoke was ranked the top incoming freshman according to Inside Lacrosse.
• Sophomore TD Ierlan has been nearly unbeatable at the faceoff X this season as he ranks first in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.822) and ground balls per game (14.0).
• Junior JD Colarusso has started all six games in goal for the Great Danes, compiling a 5.90 goals against average and a .631 save percentage that ranks first nationally in 315 minutes of action.
Canisius-Albany Series Notes
• Canisius and Albany meet for the sixth time in the last seven seasons on Tuesday as the two Empire-State schools renewed their rivalry last season after taking break in the series during the 2016 campaign.
• The series has been dominated by the road team as all five previous matchups have been won the away squad.
• In their most recent matchup, the Great Danes recorded a 20-11 victory over the Griffs at the Demske Sports Complex on March 21, 2017.
• Canisius earned the program’s first-ever win against a nationally-ranked school with a 13-10 victory at No. 13 Albany on March 25, 2014.
Canisius Versus Ranked Opponents
• Canisius gets a chance to improve its record against nationally-ranked competition when it hosts No. 8/9 Albany on Tuesday.
• Since the 2004 campaign, the Griffs have played 24 games against ranked competition, compiling a 1-23 mark in that time frame.
• Canisius’ one win against a ranked school in that time frame came in 14-10 triumph against No. 13 Albany on March 25, 2014 in Albany.
• The Griffs are facing a No. 1 ranked team for the third time in school history. Canisius suffered a 17-5 setback to No. 1 Loyola (Md.) in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournamentand dropped a 12-0 decision to No. 1 Denver last February at the Pioneer Classic.
