Kevin Charyszyn tallied two goals and Jake Kielly recorded his NCAA-leading sixth shutout of the season to lead No. 3 Clarkson to a 4-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Tuesday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
Nico Sturm and Terrance Amorosa also scored for the Golden Knights (16-3-1), who extended their winning streak to 12 games with the shutout victory. Sophomore Daniel Urbani turned aside 29 shots between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (10-7-1)
Following a scoreless first, Sturm got Clarkson on the board at the 12:07 mark of the middle period, finishing off a 2-on-1 shorthanded break for his seventh of the season.
Charyszyn doubled the Knights margin to 2-0 with a little more than four minutes to play in the second when he beat Urbani with a wrist shot from close range.
Amorosa increased the Knights cushion to 3-0 just past the midway point of the third period with a power-play tally, wiring a one-timer off the crossbar and in from the top of the right point.
Charyszyn closed out the scoring late in the third when he beat Urbani high to the glove side on a breakaway immediately following the expiration of a Clarkson penalty.

“I thought it was going to be tight game. (Daniel) Urbani was playing great for us in net. They had the advantage in shots on net, but there was not a lot of scoring chances either way in those moments. it was a close game and it felt like it was going to be a 2-0 or 2-1. I did not feel as though it was going to be a 4-0 game in the end.
“They pushed after getting the shorthanded goal. that was a big moment in the game. We were on the power play and did not have a great possession and they were able to get the shorthanded goal on a 2-on-1 break. They really pushed after that. I don’t know if our guys were really ready for their push. I wished we would have pushed back and put a couple of quality shifts together to get through that second period down just 1-0. That would have felt better for us and would have given us a better chance in the third, but we were unable to do that.”
Game Notes
• Tuesday’s contest served as the sixth all-time meeting between Canisius and Clarkson. The Knights now hold a 2-1-3 edge in the all-time series.
• Canisius slipped to 3-4 versus nationally-ranked competition in 2017-18 with the setback to Clarkson. Three of those four losses have come to teams ranked in the top 5.
• The Griffs were held without a power play goal for just the fourth time in 18 games in 2017-18.
• Canisius was held off the scoreboard for the first time during the 2017-18 season and the first time since a 3-0 shutout at Holy Cross on Dec. 30, 2016 (38 games).
• The 12 shots taken by Canisius were a season-low, surpassing their previous season low of 21, set against Mercyhurst on Nov. 11.
