CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
Women’s basketball senior Sarah Cooley has been named the Canisius Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cooley, who holds a 3.82 grade point average as a political science major, started in the home opener for the Golden Griffins and recorded 29 minutes on the floor. The Lexington Ky., native played in 30 games during her junior campaign and posted a season-high 12 points against Rider. She finished the 2016-17 season averaging 3.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, while dishing out 25 assists.
The Canisius athletic department has a strong tradition of success in the classroom, with 17 varsity programs recording a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the 2016-17 spring semester. Fourteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school’s 330 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.28 in the spring session.
Additionally, last spring saw a record 27 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Those 27 student-athletes represent 12 different teams. A total of 227 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 69 percent of the College’s student-athlete population.
Women’s Basketball returns to action Wednesday, taking on Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure at the Koessler Athletic Center. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN3.
