This week’s featured show is the Small Smalls CD Release Extravaganza.

Small Smalls was formed by Colette Montague as a solo recording/studio project in 2010. The idea to turn it into a full band was hatched after meeting Vic Lazar that same year, although the two did not officially collaborate live on the songs until almost two years later, under the provisional live moniker of Tigers are Strong.

The current official “Small Smalls” line up is comprised of Colette Montague on bass, keys and vocals, Steve Malczewski on electric guitar, keys and vocals, and Dave Borden (formerly of Patrons of Sweet and currently of The River’s Teeth) replacing Vic Lazar on drum duties. This trio of Montague/Malczewski/Borden has been diligently working on a live set and composing new material for the past several months.

The Small Smalls material comes across with a catchy, pop tinge, but there is a somber and even somewhat melancholy overarching quality to the music. It is not “downer” rock for certain, but it has a more dense and earthy quality in it’s lyrical content that is in contrast to some of the upbeat and synthesizer laden indie rock it might emit on initial listen. Lo/Fi dreamy pop with a slightly sharpened edge of humor; cathartic while remaining light hearted.

Four years in the making, their first full-length studio album “Things Can Only Get Worse” is finally ready to be released to the masses! Come and be immersed in the spectacle! What’s the worst that can happen? Pam Swarts will start off the evening with luscious layers and loops on synth/vox/guitar. The hip hop freestylins’ of James Levy, Jr take the stage right after. Followed by Shawn Lewis of Lesionread and Space Cubs who will provide a transcendent video installation. All leading up to Small Smalls big performances starting around 9:00pm! Doors open at 7:00pm over at Milkie’s on the Elmwood strip, and there’s only a $5 cover at the door!
