AMHERST — Christopher Drongosky, a past recreation commissioner and managing partner of specialty retailer Simply Certificates, is campaigning for a town council seat in this year’s elections.

The two Town Board seats currently held by Council Members Ramona Popowich and Steven Sanders have terms that end this year. Popowich said she would not seek re-election to a second term, while Sanders will be ending his second consecutive term, which is the limit within town government.

Drongosky is seeking the Republican Party line in November’s election. As a result, he will be vying against fellow GOP council candidates Erin Baker and Joseph Spino in a primary election on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The two candidates with the most votes in the primary will be on the Republican ticket in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

According to a press release, among Drongosky’s accomplishments is assisting in saving the former Harlem Road School to use as a community center.

The release also stated that the candidate served on the Planning Board, where he advocated for responsible development.

“Development issues were easy for me,” he said. “1 followed a simple rule – if it maintained the character of the neighborhood, I supported it; if it changed the character of the neighborhood, I voted against it and will continue to follow that rule as a councilman.”

Drongosky added that he has watched in “disgust of the Westwood situation,” referring to it is as the main reason for his candidacy.

“My first resolution in January will be to direct the Town Attorney’s Office to commence eminent domain of the Westwood Country Club and transform the property into a world-class recreation park with baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse fields; tennis courts; pickleball facilities and walking trails,” Drongosky said in the press release.
