Buffalo’s first baseman, Rowdy Tellez went 3-3 with three RBI and two walks but it was not enough as they fall to the Mud Hens 6-3 Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.
Buffalo gave the ball to LuisSantos who was making his 18th start of the season in a matchup with Toledo. He set down five batters on strikes while yielding a pair of walks. After tossing three hitless frames, Santos allowed three runs on five hits in the fourth and fifth innings to put him on the hook for the loss. Mat Dermody replaced him after pitching five complete innings. Santos’ record moved to 3-10 with the loss.
The first run of the game came on a two out double for the Mud Hens in the fourth. Omar Infante started the inning with a double into the left field corner. Santos fanned the next two Mud Hens hitters and was close to wiggling out of trouble until Tyler Collins ripped another double, this time to center, to score Infante for the game’s first run. A single by left fielder Jacoby Jones brought in another run and gave the Mud Hens a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Back-to-back two out doubles for Infante and Efren Navaro added a run to the Mud Hens lead in the fifth.
A two run home run off the bat of the catcher Bran Holaday extended Toledo’s advantage to 5-1 over the Herd in the sixth.
Michael Saunders sent a double to left in the fifth to give the Herd a one out base runner. With a man in scoring position, Rowdy Tellez smacked a base hit under the glove of the first baseman to bring home Saunders and cut the Mud Hens lead to 2-1.
Down to their final out, singles from Saunders and Gregorio Petit started the rally for Buffalo in the ninth. Both runners advanced on a defensive indifference to move into second and third. Tellez picked up his third hit of the night driving a single up the middle to score both runs and make it 6-3. But the rally was cut short with Teoscar Hernandez striking out to end the game.
The Bisons will take on the Mud Hens in game two of the four game set on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Bisons Notes: Danny Jansen was 3-2 with a walk… Rowdy Tellez went 3-3 with two walks and three RBI… Michael Saunders was 3-5 with two runs scored.
