ALMOND — A 74-year-old man currently living out of his car was charged Thursday with third-degree arson, accused of trying to burn down the home of a Karr-Valley Road man from whom he had previously bought vehicles.

According to New York State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation had responded to the Karr-Valley Road on Wednesday after Allegany County Fire Investigators deemed a residential fire to be suspicious. After numerous interviews with the homeowner and neighbors it was determined that Gary R. Marvel was the suspect after being seen with items to start the fire. Earlier Marvel bought a farm tractor and a van from the homeowner then tried to return them at a later time. The homeowner refused to refund the money from the purchase.

Marvel was located and arrested, processed at SP Amity and arraigned at the Town of Friendship Court before being remanded to the Allegany County Jail on lieu of $5,000 bail.
