The Rochester Red Wings matched a season-high with four home runs, two from Kennys Vargas, to knock off the Indianapolis Indians 7-1 Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
Mitch Garver and Niko Goodrum both hit solo home runs for the Red Wings (59-44), who snapped a brief two-game losing skid with the victory. Rochester also homered four times in game two on April 9 at Syracuse.
Dillon Gee (3-1) surrendered one run over 6.0 innings, bouncing back from a rough start in his last outing. He scattered six hits and didn’t issue a walk while striking out seven.
The Wings wasted little time jumping on Indians (57-46) starter Tyler Eppler (6-6). Garver hit his homer with one out in the 1st to make it 1-0. Matt Hague made it 2-0 when he doubled and later scored with two outs when he stole third base and scampered home on an error.
Joey Terdoslavich cut the lead in half at 2-1 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.
Goodrum answered with a home run on an 0-2 pitch leading off the 2nd.
The 3-1 lead remained until Vargas hit a line-drive home run on a 3-0 pitch to extend the advantage to 4-1. His second came in the 8th inning to put the game out of reach, capping the scoring at 7-1.
Gee set the side down in order just once, in the 5th, but allowed just one extra-base hit in the game. Indianapolis put runners aboard to open the 6th inning but Gee worked out of trouble, using a pair of strikeouts.
Jake Reed (2.0 IP) and John Curtiss (1.0 IP) tossed scoreless relief behind Gee. The only baserunner against either pitcher was after Reed hit Jacob Stallings leading off the 7th.
J.B. Shuck finished 3-for-5 with a double while Hague and Vargas both tallied multi-hit efforts for the Wings. Garver, Hague and Vargas combined to score six of Rochester’s seven runs.
The Red Wings will look for the split tomorrow as Kyle Gibson returns to start for Rochester after being optioned from Minnesota.
