The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas took top honors at the 2017 American Legion Department State Convention in Syracuse on Friday.

The State Convention parade features military units from across the state. The Tonawandas group was awarded first place in the American Legion category with a score of 93.44. Second place went to Yankee Doodle Band from Rensselaer with a score of 88.6.

The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas, which was formed in 1929 by World War I veterans and Post 264 members, has 90 members. The band will hold two summer concerts, at 7 p.m.

Wednesday in Basset Park on Klein Road in Amherst (in the Clearfield Community Center if it rains) and at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 in Niawanda Park in the City of Tonawanda (rain date is Aug. 9).

All the concerts are free and open to the public.
