NEW YORK — Attorney General Schneiderman has issued a consumer alert warning New Yorkers about recent deceptive advertisements that mislead consumers into believing they are eligible to receive settlement money from the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The ads seek to induce consumers into purchasing paid subscriptions in order to learn how to receive settlement funds and mislead consumers into believing that they are eligible for guaranteed money backed by the government. The Attorney General urges consumers not to provide payment information to individuals or entities who claim they can assist in obtaining tobacco settlement money.
The Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) is a legal contract between the 46 states, including New York, and five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia and major tobacco manufacturers that resolved several lawsuits against the tobacco industry for tobacco-related costs.
