Anio J. Nubelo entered into rest on June 1, 2017. Born on June 20, 1924, he was the son Frank and Antonetta (Antenoss) Nubelo.
Anio served in the US Navy during World War II. He was stationed aboard on the USS Sapelo, APA-12 Guilford and the USS Dorothea L. Dix. He was part of the invasion of Normandy and the invasion of Sicily. He enlisted in the Navy in December of 1941 right after Pearl Harbor at the age 17. He received numerous medal for his service including the American Campaign, the Jubilee of Liberty, the Atlantic Pacfic Campaign, the New York State Medal of Merit, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the World War II Medal. While stationed on the USS Dorothea L. Dix he met Ernest Hemingway, who was a war corespondent. While serving in the US Navy, he visited Iceland, Scotland, Italy, Africa and Japan. Anio was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Anio was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor, in 2000, whom he married on June 3, 1950 in St. Anthony’s Church. He is the beloved father of Nancy, Joseph and Karen (Greg) Swogier. Cherished grandfather of Samantha, Joel and Kaelan Swogier, Amanda and Christina Nubelo. Brother of the late Gurrier Nubelo, Maria Porter, Victor Nubelo and Grace Sherwood. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 3-7 PM on Monday at the Taylor and Reynolds Funeral Home, 70 Niagara Street, where prayers will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Parish at 10:00 AM. Interment in Cold Springs Cemetery.
