UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS


BUFFALO – The University at Buffalo football team has scheduled a home-and-home series with Liberty University, the teams announced on Saturday. Buffalo will travel to Liberty in 2019 with the Bulls host the Flames in 2023.
Currently a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Liberty is scheduled to join the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2019. The Flames are slated to play as an independent.
Turner Gill, head coach at Buffalo from 2006-2009, has been the head coach at Liberty since 2012 where he’s compiled a record of 35-25. He has led the Flames to a share of the Big South championship in four of his five seasons in Lynchburg, VA.
Gill and UB head coach Lance Leipold previously worked together at Nebraska. Leipold was on the Cornhuskers’ staff with Gill from 2001-03.
The two teams met once before back in 1998. Liberty won the game, 27-24, in overtime at Liberty. It was UB’s first ever overtime game.
Buffalo will go to Liberty on September 14, 2019. The Flames will come to UB Stadium on September 16, 2023.
One other schedule note – Buffalo’s game at Old Dominion, originally planned for 2019, has been rescheduled for 2023.
Buffalo will open the 2017 at Minnesota on August 31.
