NIAGARA UNIV. – The Purple Eagles dropped a close 5-3 game to the Siena Saints in their final home game of the regular season on Friday.

Game Recap

  • The first two innings of play were a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Saints, but Siena got on the board, 1-0, in the top of the third.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff solo shot from McCauley tied things up, 1-1. The Purple Eagles continues to gain offensive momentum in the bottom of the seventh. Geoff Seto singled up the middle, scoring Owen Dziados. With bases loaded, Nick Bernick struck out swinging, but then reach base on a passed ball, sending Joel Brophy home to put Niagara in the lead, 3-1.
  • In the top of the eighth, a homerun from Joe Drpich brought the Saint within one run of Niagara’s lead, 3-2. In the top of the ninth, Siena scored twice and held NU off in the bottom of the ninth to come away with the win.


Inside the Numbers

  • McCauley, Bernick and Seto had one RBI each.
  • McCauley, Dziados and Brophy had a team-best two hits each.
  • Starter Nate Mascellino fanned four batters and allowed one unearned run in 7.0 innings pitched.
  • Matthew Brash (5-1) struck out three and allowed four runs (one earned) in 2.0 innings pitched.
